How to screenshot an entire webpage in Chrome

A normal screenshot only captures what fits on your screen. Here are three ways to capture the whole scrolling page in Chrome, starting with one that's built in, and how to fix the usual problems: repeated headers, blank images and pages that are too long.

1. Built in: Chrome DevTools (free, no install)

  1. Open the page and press F12 (or Ctrl+Shift+I; on Mac Cmd+Option+I).
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+P (Mac: Cmd+Shift+P) to open the command menu.
  3. Type full size and choose Capture full size screenshot. A PNG downloads.

It's reliable on simple pages. Its limits: PNG only; images that load as you scroll may come out blank; and on pages whose content scrolls inside a panel (many web apps, inboxes, dashboards), it only captures the outer window.

2. In other browsers

3. With an extension (one click, more control)

Full Page Screenshot

Click the icon or press Ctrl+Shift+S and it scrolls, waits for images, and saves the whole page as PNG, JPEG or PDF. Sticky headers appear once instead of down the whole image, and it can capture just part of a page or a scrolling panel. It can also black out emails, card numbers and other private details before the image is made. Everything runs on your computer and nothing is uploaded.

Long and scrolling screenshots on Windows, Mac and phones

A "long screenshot" or "scrolling screenshot" is the same thing as a full-page capture, but the tool depends on the device:

DeviceWhat to use
Windows (Chrome or Edge)The browser methods above. Windows' own Snipping Tool captures only what's on screen, not the whole page.
Mac (Chrome or Safari)Chrome DevTools as above. In Safari, File → Export as PDF saves the full page; Cmd+Shift+5 only captures the screen.
AndroidTake a screenshot, then tap "Capture more" or "Scroll" in the preview.
iPhoneScreenshot a page in Safari, tap the preview, then choose Full Page, which saves a PDF.

Fixing the common problems

The header or a chat bubble repeats all the way down

Sticky and fixed elements stay on screen while a tool scrolls, so they show up in every section. Tools that hide them after the first screen avoid it. Full Page Screenshot does this automatically.

Images are blank or grey

Many sites load images only when you scroll to them. Scroll to the bottom and back up before capturing, or use a tool that does that for you.

The page is extremely long

Browsers limit how big one image can be (roughly 16,000 pixels on a side). For very long pages, save as PDF instead, which splits the page into sheets. See how to save a webpage as a PDF.

The content is inside a scrolling box

Some pages scroll inside an inner panel rather than the whole window. Use a tool that can capture a scrolling panel, or the region you need.
