How to take a scrolling screenshot on a Chromebook

The Chromebook's Screen capture tool is good, but it only captures what's on the screen: it has no scrolling mode. If what you need is a whole web page, top to bottom, there are three ways, and one of them is already built in.

On this page
  1. First, the normal screenshot shortcuts
  2. Built in: Chrome's full-size capture
  3. One click: a full-page screenshot extension
  4. As a PDF: print to PDF
  5. On a school or work Chromebook

First, the normal screenshot shortcuts

WhatKeys
Whole screenCtrl + Show windows (the key with a rectangle and two lines), or the Screenshot key if yours has one
Part of the screen, a window, or a recordingCtrl + Shift + Show windows opens the Screen capture toolbar. On an external keyboard without that key: Ctrl + Shift + F5
Tablet modePress Power + Volume down

Screenshots land in Downloads and on the clipboard. None of these scroll.

Built in: Chrome's full-size capture

Chrome has a hidden command that captures the entire page. It works on a Chromebook exactly as on any computer:

  1. Open the page and press Ctrl + Shift + I to open developer tools. (There's no F12 key on most Chromebooks.)
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + P to open the command menu.
  3. Type full size and choose Capture full size screenshot.

A PNG of the whole page goes to Downloads. It has three common problems: images further down may be blank because they hadn't loaded yet, sticky headers can appear more than once, and pages that scroll inside a panel (Gmail, Slack, dashboards) come out cut off. On a school Chromebook, developer tools are often disabled.

One click: a full-page screenshot extension

Chrome extensions run on Chromebooks, so a screenshot extension gives you a button that scrolls and stitches for you.

Click the icon and it captures the whole page as PNG, JPEG or PDF. It scrolls slowly enough for images to load, shows sticky headers once, and can capture a panel that scrolls on its own, like a Gmail thread or a dashboard table. It can also black out email addresses and phone numbers before the picture is made, which is handy for anything you're sharing with a class. No account, nothing uploaded, and it installs with no permission warning.

As a PDF: print to PDF

If you just need the content, not a picture: press Ctrl + P, set Destination to Save as PDF, and save. The layout may change for print, and some sites hide parts of the page when printing. More on saving pages as PDF.

On a school or work Chromebook

Administrators can block developer tools, extensions, or both. If the Chrome Web Store says an extension is blocked by your administrator, only they can allow it; ask your teacher or IT team. Print to PDF usually still works, and so do the normal screenshot keys: take several and scroll between them.
